How to Rank in Google AI Overviews (And Why the Citation Is Harder Than the Mention)
We tracked 2,500 Google AI Overview responses. It issued 54x fewer citations than ChatGPT. Here is how to get included, and how to actually verify it.
To be cited in a Google AI Overview, you generally need to rank in the organic top 10 for the query, then present the answer as a self-contained passage in the first 60 words of a page structured around the question itself. That is the standard advice, it is correct, and every article ranking for this term already says it.
Here is what none of them say. We tracked 2,500 Google AI Overview responses across two client brands between 27 April and 26 July 2026, alongside the same prompts on ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google AI Overviews issued 54 times fewer citations than ChatGPT on an identical response volume — a gap we first surfaced while building our LLM SEO citation dataset.
That single number should change how you plan this work. Getting into an AI Overview is a brand outcome far more often than it is a traffic outcome, and if you have sold it internally as a traffic play you are going to have an uncomfortable quarterly review.
The citation scarcity problem
Same brand, same prompt set, same window, 1,250 responses per platform.
| Platform | Responses | Brand mentions | Total citations issued | Citations per response |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 1,250 | 678 | 3,183 | 2.55 |
| Perplexity | 1,250 | 663 | 891 | 0.71 |
| Google AI Overviews | 1,250 | 416 | 59 | 0.05 |
uncap.com, B2B ecommerce, US, 27 April to 26 July 2026.
Of those 59 citations, exactly 2 went to the brand’s own domain, a 3.4% share. The brand was named 416 times and linked twice.
The pattern held on a second brand in a completely different market and language:
| Platform | Responses | Brand mentions | Citations issued | Brand citations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 300 | 254 | 1,061 | 105 |
| Perplexity | 300 | 142 | 45 | 9 |
| Google AI Overviews | 300 | 82 | 110 | 15 |
tetto94.it, roofing, Italy, same window.
Ten times fewer citations from AI Overviews than from ChatGPT, on identical volume.
What this means
- AI Overviews mentions your brand roughly as often as ChatGPT does, and links you far less. Both matter, but they are different wins.
- If AI Overview inclusion is on your KPI list, define whether you mean mentioned or cited. They will diverge by an order of magnitude.
- For referral traffic specifically, ChatGPT and Perplexity are better investments per unit of effort. AI Overviews is where you defend brand presence.
AI Overviews and AI Mode are not the same target
The audience discussion around this topic is full of people conflating the two, and no page in the current top 10 separates them. They behave differently enough to matter, and the distinction matters for the same reason GEO and SEO diverge rather than being interchangeable labels.
AI Overviews appear above organic results on a normal Google search. The user typed a query, got a synthesised answer, and the blue links are still there underneath. Citation links appear as small source references inside the overview.
AI Mode is a distinct conversational surface where the user is in a chat-style session. The interaction is multi-turn, the queries are longer and more conversational, and the answer is composed across a fan-out of several underlying searches rather than one.
Practical consequences:
- AI Mode queries are longer and more specific, which means your long-tail and question-shaped content matters more there than on the classic SERP.
- The fan-out means a single AI Mode answer may draw from several different queries you never targeted directly. Topic coverage beats keyword targeting.
- Optimising for AI Overviews is largely SEO plus extractability. Optimising for AI Mode looks more like optimising for ChatGPT, because the interaction pattern is the same.
If you are building one programme, build it for the chat pattern. It covers both.
What actually gets you included
Six steps, in dependency order. Skipping step one wastes the rest.
1. Rank organically first
AI Overview sources overlap heavily with the organic top 10 for the same query. This is the single most reliable finding across every independent study of the surface, and it means AI Overview optimization is not an alternative to SEO. It is a second stage that runs after SEO has qualified you — the same retrieval-then-extraction pipeline we map out in answer engine optimization.
If you are not on page one, fix that before anything in this list.
2. Answer in the first 60 words
The extraction step rewards passages that stand alone. A paragraph that begins “As we discussed above” or “In today’s competitive landscape” cannot be lifted into an answer, because it does not make sense outside your page.
Write the answer first, then the context. Bold it if it helps you enforce the discipline.
3. Use the question as the heading
Pull the People Also Ask questions from the SERP you are targeting and use their verbatim phrasing as H2s. Each one gets a complete two-to-four sentence answer immediately underneath before any elaboration.
For this query, the live PAA set is: “How do you rank in Google AI overview?”, “How to rank on Google with AI?”, “How to beat AI Overviews?”, “How to rank in AI answers?”, “How to get rank in AI overview?” and “Is Google AI overview 100% accurate?” All six are answered in this article, by design.
4. Publish comparable sets, not single narratives
We classified the content types of the 25 most-cited domains across our US client’s prompt set. Ranked lists appeared in 19 of them and topic guides in 17. Case studies appeared twice.
An overview answering “best X for Y” needs a source that already contains a comparable set. Give it a table with consistent attributes in a consistent order and you become the easiest source in the pool.
5. Fix the entity graph, especially the directories
For our Italian client, four of the top seven domains Google cited were local directories: prontopro.it, edilnet.it, instapro.it and paginegialle.it. Not competitors. Directories.
We stopped trying to displace them and instead claimed and corrected the brand’s listing inside each one, and aligned the name, description and category with the site and the Google Business Profile. If the model is going to cite a directory, the directory should describe you accurately and point back to you.
This is the least glamorous item on the list and it produced the fastest movement.
6. Track inclusion, do not assume it
A ranking does not mean inclusion, and inclusion on Tuesday does not mean inclusion on Thursday. AI Overviews are non-deterministic and Google re-generates them constantly.
Which brings us to the thing missing from every guide currently ranking for this term.
How to actually verify AI Overview citation
No page in the current top 10 tells you how to check whether any of this worked. Here are three ways, in increasing order of rigour.
Manual, free, and genuinely useful once. Take twenty target queries. Run each in an incognito window with location set to your target market. Record three things per query: whether an AI Overview appeared, whether your brand was named, and whether your domain was cited. Repeat weekly. It is tedious and it will teach you more about your category in one afternoon than a month of reading.
Platform monitoring. Tools including Searchable, Ahrefs Brand Radar, Profound and Semrush track AI Overview appearances across a fixed prompt set and report mention and citation rates over time. This is what produced the numbers in this article. Expect day-to-day variance: our daily reports on one brand swung between a 44% and a 71% mention rate inside five days at a sample of 150 responses per report.
API-level, for teams that want raw data. The DataForSEO SERP API returns the full AI Overview object for a query, including every cited domain, the source titles and the exact text of each overview element. That gives you a citation-level dataset you own, at per-call pricing, with whatever cadence you choose. If you can write a scheduled script, this is the most flexible option and usually the cheapest at scale.
Whichever you pick, capture the baseline before you change anything. We compare the monitoring options in best AEO and AI visibility tools.
What the intervention produced
Steps four through six on the Italian client, measured daily.
| Report | Date | Visibility score | Mention rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 22 Jul | 16.7 | 25.3% |
| 2 | 22 Jul | 14.7 | 44.0% |
| 3 | 23 Jul | 22.0 | 63.3% |
| 4 | 24 Jul | 24.0 | 60.0% |
| 5 | 25 Jul | 26.0 | 54.7% |
| 6 | 26 Jul | 32.0 | 71.3% |
A 92% relative lift in five days, across a prompt set covering all three platforms.
Three honest caveats. The window is short. Each report samples 150 responses, so noise is real and visible in the report 5 dip. And AI answers are non-deterministic, so some of this movement would have happened anyway. Read the trend, not the decimals. I include the wobbly reports rather than the smooth ones because a chart that only goes up is usually a chart with data removed.
The uncomfortable part: you cannot beat an AI Overview
The PAA for this query includes “How to beat AI Overviews?”, which is the question everybody actually wants answered.
You cannot outrank it. It sits above every organic result by design. There is no position zero to win because the overview took it.
There are three realistic responses, and they are strategies rather than tricks.
Be inside it. Everything above. This wins brand presence reliably and clicks occasionally, given a 0.05 citations-per-response rate.
Target queries that do not trigger one. Overview presence varies enormously by query type. Transactional, navigational and highly commercial queries trigger them less often than informational ones. Audit your keyword set for overview presence and weight your effort toward the pages where the click still exists.
Change what you measure. If AI Overviews absorb the informational click, informational content stops being a traffic asset and becomes a brand asset. That is a real loss and pretending otherwise helps nobody. The response is to reweight the portfolio toward pages where a click is still available, and to start counting mentions as an outcome in their own right rather than a consolation prize.
Frequently asked questions
How do you rank in Google AI overview? Rank in the organic top 10 for the query first, since AI Overview sources overlap heavily with page one. Then structure the page so the answer appears as a self-contained passage in the first 60 words, under a heading matching the question phrasing, with comparable sets rather than single-subject narratives where the query implies options.
How to rank on Google with AI? If you mean using AI to produce content, the ranking rules have not changed: the page still needs to demonstrate experience, expertise and original value, and AI-assisted content with no additional insight tends to underperform. If you mean ranking inside Google’s AI surfaces, see the six steps above.
How to beat AI Overviews? You cannot outrank one, it appears above all organic results. The three viable strategies are getting cited inside it, targeting queries that do not trigger an overview, and reweighting your measurement so brand mentions count as an outcome rather than only clicks.
How to rank in AI answers? The mechanics are consistent across surfaces: be retrievable, be extractable, be entity-consistent. What changes is attribution generosity. In our data, ChatGPT issued 2.55 citations per response, Perplexity 0.71 and Google AI Overviews 0.05.
How to get rank in AI overview? Same as the first answer. There is no position number inside an AI Overview, so what you are actually optimising for is inclusion as a cited source, not a rank.
Is Google AI overview 100% accurate? No. AI Overviews synthesise across multiple sources and can misattribute facts, blend outdated information or state confidently wrong things. Google labels the feature as generative and advises verifying important information. This is directly relevant to brand work: if the overview describes your company incorrectly, the fix is usually correcting the third-party sources it is drawing from rather than editing your own site.
Does AI Overview reduce organic traffic? For informational queries, yes, in most measured studies. The effect is smaller on commercial and transactional queries where users still want to reach a site. Audit which of your pages sit behind overview-triggering queries before assuming a uniform impact.
Where I have landed on this
I have gone from treating AI Overviews as the main event to treating it as the least rewarding of the three surfaces we track, and I want to be clear that this is a change of mind based on the data rather than a position I started with.
Fifty-nine citations from 1,250 responses is not a traffic channel. It is a brand channel with a small traffic side effect. Meanwhile ChatGPT, on identical volume, issued 3,183. If somebody handed me a fixed budget tomorrow and asked where to spend it for measurable return, I would put most of it on the chat assistants and treat AI Overviews as something you earn as a byproduct of doing the same work well.
That said, the mentions are real. Four hundred and sixteen times, Google described a company to somebody researching its category. You cannot put that in a sessions report and it still matters, in the same unsatisfying way that brand advertising matters.
The practical answer is to do the work once and measure it three ways. The tactics that get you into an AI Overview are the same tactics that get you cited by ChatGPT: rank, answer cleanly, publish comparable sets, keep your entity consistent. You are not running three programmes. You are running one and reading three scoreboards, and it is worth knowing in advance which of them is going to look disappointing — or let us run that programme for you.
